Word of the Day: Yavanna – the ‘giver of fruits,’ lover of things that grow, and next to Varda in reverence. coming from yávë ‘fruit’ (Quenya) and anna ‘gift.’ Additionally, she was one of the Aratar and was the spouse of Aulë and sister of Vána.
Yavanna history
The Dwarves were initially made by Aulë, her spouse, though he eventually gave it up to Ilúvatar, realizing that he initially made the Dwarves mainly because he didn’t want to wait for the Children of Ilúvatar. He kept this work hidden, but then Yavanna told him how great Ilúvatar is, forgiving him for what he did as he humbly repented.
She was still grieved, however, wondering if they would cut down the trees. This was after Ilúvatar allowed Aulë’s Dwarves to survive.
She went to Manwë as she was worried that anything she had will be free from dominion of others. As a result, Manwë brought her concerns to Ilúvatar, who created the Ents to protect the trees.
