Word of the Day: Mellon – the password to enter Moria, it means ‘friend’ in Sindarin and Noldorin.
Mellon in the War of the Ring
It is derived from melnā ‘dear, beloved,’ and also from Mel ‘love’, as stated in the etymologies. Furthermore, Elvellon is ‘elf-friend’ in Sindarin. This is from el ‘star-elf’ and Mellon ‘friend’.
It is commonly stated that friendship is the main theme of Tolkien’s works, especially the Lord of the Rings. While it’s not clearly stated why friendship is important, people seem to notice the strong ties the characters experience at first glance – all working towards a common goal, in the destruction of the One Ring. (Though most seem to not have realized this goal until they got to Rivendell.) There are many instances where the friendship allows them to go through such tough times in the War of the Ring.
