Word of the Day: Eldar (singular Elda) – high Elves, of the High Kindred, West-elves as told in Lord of the Rings. It is used interchangeably with Noldor. It became a term reserved mainly for the West-elves (those who dwelled in the west)
While it looks similar to “elder,” it has been noted to be accidental by Tolkien and should not be replaced as such.
What do the eldar do?
They are also known as the People of the Great Journey, People of the Stars, Noldor, Elves of the West. While they’re not living in the Shire, they sometimes explored there in the seasons of Spring (‘tuilë’ (Q) ‘ethuil’ (S)) and Autumn (‘yavië’ (Q) ‘firith’ (S)). They are sometimes seen in the Woody End. But now not a lot of them are found east of the Great Sea. (Lord of the Rings, Ch. 3)
