hröa and fėa

Word of the Day: Hröa (+ feä) They are Quenya terms for ‘body’ (hröa), and ‘spirit’ (fėa) – pl. hröar and feär. They were used interchangeably and very often in The Nature of Middle Earth.

The children of Ilúvatar are known to have a hröa and fėa, and their fėar comes from the Secret Fire of Ilúvatar. While their hröar comes from Arda – for example, the elves, unlike Men, do not die of disease or of old age.

However, the Valar and the Quendi, are dependent on Arda, thus, they must suffer from its slow aging. Unlike the Valar, the Quendi are incarnate and consist of union with the body (hröa) and the spirit (feä). As mentioned by the Eldar – they were slowly consumed by the feä (spirit). This means that after their bodies die, the memory of their spirits retained.
