Word of the Day: Taniquetil

November 15, 2021      1 Comment

Word of the Day: Taniquetil – Quenya, ‘high snow peak,’ or ‘high white peak.’ It is the highest mountain in Pelóri and the tallest peak in Arda. It is also called Oilossë, the great Holy Mountain, or ‘ever-snow-white,’ ‘everlasting snow.’

Taniquetil, also called Oilossë, ‘everlasting snow.’ Source: PBS Weather Studios from GIPHY

Under the root TAHA meaning ‘lofty snowcap.’

The second element is from root NIQI (ninqë ‘white,’ niqis ‘snow,’ niquetil ‘snowcap,’).

cf. nieninqë ‘white tear’ (snowdrop) in entry Nielíqui

Gnomish: Donigwethil (dâ ‘high’)

GL: nigweth ‘storm’ (property of snow, but that sense has evaporated)
